Homes evacuated after car hits gas meter

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Homes on Cortland Avenue in Buffalo were evacuated Tuesday night after a car crashed into a gas meter.

Immediately after neighbors said they could smell gas in the air.

There was no structural damage to 244 Courtland Avenue, which is off of East Delavan, but the car damaged the gas meter. Officials originally only planned to evacuate three homes, but eventually evacuated the entire block. They also shut down the street and turned off the power as crews worked to contain the leak.

Tammy Sanford was inside her home on Courtland when the crash happened. She said it sounded like a big boom followed by what sounded like rain.

When she looked out her window, Sanford said she saw a car in her yard and four men running away.

“I immediately panicked and I ran upstairs to get my landlord. I thought the house was going to blow up because of the gas,” she said. “I feel blessed; it was nothing but God. I feel so blessed because it could have been worse.”
