BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – National Fuel is warning customers about a phone scam where a person pretends to represent their company and threaten to shut off service unless an immediate payment is made.
Utility customers are getting calls from scammers who insist payment be made by a prepaid debit card. Unlike a credit card or check, once the money is transferred from a prepaid debit card, the customer will be unable to redeem it or stop the funds from being processed.
National Fuel is reminding customers that it would never insist on a payment by prepaid debit card or wire transfer, and that they do accept checks or credit card for payments. Gas meters are the company’s property and therefore their responsibility to repair.
Also, you should never let anyone inside your home unless they have proper National Fuel credentials. And be aware that some customers have received e-mails about overdue account notices, but these bogus e-mails could load malware onto your computer.
If you have any questions regarding a call you’ve received, contact National Fuel to find out the status of your account by calling 1-800-444-3130.
