Police: Contractor placed hidden camera in bathroom

AMHERST, NY (WIVB) – Amherst Police have arrested Kevin R. Eckert, a 60 year-old Town of Lockport contractor and charged him with installing a hidden camera in the bathroom of a North Amherst home while he was doing repair work. Police say Eckert placed the camera in order to videotape a female resident while she showered.

“I think you could pretty much say it’s an ultimate violation of privacy. You’re in your own home – in your own shower, you look down, and you see a video camera? I think that’s about as bad as it gets,” says Det. Lt. Rick Walter of the Amherst Police.

Eckert was arrested at his home Saturday morning and charged with 2 counts of unlawful surveillance in the 2nd degree, which are felonies. He is also facing misdemeanor stalking charges. Officers executing a search warrant on Eckert’s home recovered several pieces of evidence.

Detectives say Eckert had been hired by the family numerous times for various jobs around their home. They believe he installed the camera about a week ago.

“When our detectives got there, they found what’s commonly referred to as a ‘trail camera’ that the suspect had placed there behind the vent cover. And that’s activated by motion,” Det. Lt. Walter explains, “so every time she would get in the shower, the camera would activate and start recording.”

Police are asking anyone who has hired Eckert in the past and feel he acted suspiciously while in their home, to call Amherst police at 689-1343.

“We’d be interested in hearing from anybody who had Mr. Eckert do work for them at some time within the last year or so,” Det. Lt. Walter says.
