BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Buffalo firefighters will now carry a drug that can reverse the effects of a heroin overdose.

Mayor Byron Brown announced Wednesday that firefighters will be trained on how to use narcan, a drug that can be administered through a nasal spray and reverses the effects of a heroin overdose.

Buffalo Police are already carrying the potentially life-saving drug.

Heroin overdoses in Erie County increased 45-percent from 2011 to 2012.
