ALLEGANY, N.Y. (AP) — State police say a stretch of Interstate 86’s westbound lanes in New York’s Southern Tier is open again after being closed when a milk tanker crashed and rolled over as the driver was trying to remove his sweater.

Trooper Victor Morales says the driver was traveling in the Cattaraugus County town of Allegany around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday when he began to take off his sweater and drifted onto the right shoulder, causing the tanker to overturn, spilling up to 7,000 gallons of milk.

The driver wasn’t injured.

About a three-mile stretch of the westbound lanes just outside Olean was closed for about 90 minutes while crews removed the tanker. The lanes reopened around noon.

Morales says a crew from the state Department of Environmental Conservation remains at the scene cleaning up the spilled milk early Wednesday afternoon. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
