NM trooper cleared in shooting of Hamburg man

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) — A prosecutor has cleared a New Mexico State Police officer in a Jan. 4 shooting in which a disoriented 72-year-old New York man was wounded after driving the wrong way on Interstate 25.

Motorists had reported the van driven by Albert J. Urban of Hamburg going the wrong way on Interstate 25, and police eventually stopped it.

Authorities said the shooting occurred when the van then drove toward and struck an officer’s vehicle.

The Las Vegas Optic reports that District Attorney Richard Flores concluded that Officer Jonathan Wright was justified in his actions and that he and other officers saved the lives of other motorists.

Charges accusing Urban of aggravated assault upon a police officer and one count of aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer were dismissed in February.
