Couple loses thousands of dollars in scam

ELMA, N.Y. (WIVB) – One Western New York couple was scammed out of thousands of dollars by a person pretending to be a family member in trouble.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is again warning the public about a scam where a person calls area residents from out-of-area phone numbers and claims to be a family member in trouble with the law. The person will say court fees or attorney fees are owed and instructs the victims to pay by purchasing prepaid cards and telling him the serial numbers.

Deputies say they have had two recent cases in the Town of Boston and Elma, where one couple lost thousands of dollars to the scam.
