Leaders kick off Donate Life Month

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Erie County leaders, medical experts and UNYTS joined together Tuesday to kick off Donate Life Month at ECMC.

Officials recognized those who have donated organs and the lives they’ve helped save along the way, but also how far we have to go.

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs says most people who sign up to be organ donors do so at auto bureaus. That’s why he’s working on ways to make the process even easier.

“The challenge we have in New York State is the percentage of people that have opted to be organ donors is lower. We’re at the lower end nationally. Now Erie County is a bit better but we want to change that. We are very charitable community, a very giving community; we want to be a leader in this,” Jacobs said.

All you have to do is sign the organ donor box when you get your driver’s license or state ID. You can also sign up online with the national registry. But UNYTS leaders say the most important thing is to talk with your family so they know your wishes.
