BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Workers at Aurubis Worldwide on Military Road, in Buffalo, began picketing early Tuesday morning.

Workers of Local 593 Steelworkers hoped they’d reach a deal for a new contract, ahead of a looming strike.  The strike has been delayed for 48 hours.

Picketers blocked the entrance to the plant Tuesday morning, stopping other workers from entering the building. A handful of Aurubis Worldwide security personal tried to clear the way.  They were helped by Buffalo Police officers.

The picket ended about a half hour later.

Local 593’s contract was supposed to end at midnight Tuesday, but some union members told News 4, they aren’t on strike yet. Workers have a two-day extension on their contracts and are in negotiations.

The 100 people who showed up to picket are part of a 500-member union.

Aurubis workers deal with metal production and other raw materials.  News 4 was told union members will go on strike at midnight Thursday if a new agreement is not reached. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
