State to issue red plates for emergency management vehicles

ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) – Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a plan that will make it easier to identify emergency workers who play a critical role during major events.

On Thursday, the governor unveiled emergency management red license plates for vehicles registered to state agencies and political subdivisions such as counties, cities, towns, and villages.

The red plates will be issued to vehicles that serve a critical role in emergencies and the plates will also serve to prioritize access for assets such as emergency fuel supplies.

The NYS Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services will determine how many plates are distributed to each agency or locality. To be eligible, the vehicle must be registered in the name of the agency or locality and as an additional safeguard to protect against potential abuse, the highest ranking government official in each locality will have to certify the vehicle is eligible for the plates. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
