WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Casey Middle School art teacher is resigning after admitting she kissed a 13-year-old boy on the mouth.
Donna Sleap pleaded guilty in court on Thursday to endangering the welfare of a child. Staff members alerted administrators about her behavior in October, and the art teacher was placed on leave in December. The incident was reportedly caught on video.
“As educators, we are advocates for students, their safety and achievement and can expect to be held to high standards of conduct at all times,” said Superintendent Scott Martzloff. “The district would like to thank Assistant District Attorney Rosanne Johnson and her team as well as the Amherst Police Department for bringing this matter to closure.”
As part of her guilty plea, the 49-year-old will have to surrender her teaching license and will not be able to re-apply. She had been a teacher in the Williamsville School District since 1988.
The Assistant District Attorney said in court, had this gone to a jury trial, she believed there would have been enough evidence to convict Sleap of second- or third-degree sexual abuse.
There is an order of protection in place preventing Sleap from seeing that student. She will be sentenced on July 30 and faces up to one year in jail.
