Rescue team saves one dog from Lake Erie ice

EVANS, N.Y. (WIVB) – An ice rescue team responded to a call about two dogs stuck on the ice in Lake Erie, Thursday morning. Only one dog survived.

Town of Evans Police say the dogs were about 40 feet from shore, and the ice was not stable. Officers were not equipped to enter the water, and an ice rescue team arrived on the scene within minutes.

The team rescued one large dog from the ice and water, and the dog was treated for hypothermia. A smaller dog could not be saved from under the ice. That dog was later recovered.

Evans Police are warning people who live along the shore of Lake Erie to stay off the ice. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
