VIDEO: Hamburg man shot during police pursuit in NM

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (WIVB) – Video obtained by The Santa Fe New Mexican shows a police officer open fire on a Hamburg man who was driving the wrong way down the interstate.

On January 4, Albert Urban of Hamburg was driving his van the wrong way on I-25 and did not comply with repeated requests from State Police officers to stop the vehicle. After hitting a spike strip that deflated one of the tires on Urban’s vehicle, officers conducted a PIT maneuver, which caused the 72-year-old’s van to roll over once.

But, as evidenced in the video, that was not enough to stop the disoriented senior citizen, who hit the gas and headed towards a police officer, who opened fire as Urban’s van slammed into the officer’s cruiser.

Prosecutors later determined the shooting was justified. However, charges were dropped against Urban, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.
