Parents protest cuts to music education in BPS

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Advocates of music education programs in Buffalo Public Schools staged a protest Wednesday night outside Stanley Makowski School, ahead of the school board meeting.

They are fighting what they say are crippling cutbacks to the district’s music programs.

Beginning with the 2012-13 school year, Buffalo scaled back its music education programs by nearly half.

Proponents of music education say it not only teaches kids to sing or play an instrument, but makes for a more well-rounded education by fostering a sense of teamwork, pride and achievement, and can even help with basic math skills. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
