BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Tuesday is Tax Day and the deadline is at midnight. According to the Internal Revenue Service, 85 percent of us now file our taxes online. If you still rely on old fashioned mail, there are some things you need to know.
The Buffalo Cayuga Post Office in Cheektowaga will close at 9 p.m. Tuesday. That’s different from previous years, it used to close at midnight.
Post office hours:
Most post offices close at 5 P.M., with earlier mailbox pickup times. Some branches do have extended hours on April 15, including:
The Buffalo main office, 1200 William St., is open until 6:00 P.M.
The Amherst branch, 5500 North Bailey Ave., is open until 5:30 P.M.
Ellicott Station, 701 Washington St., is open until 5:30 P.M.
The Williamsville branch, 5325 Sheridan Drive, is open until 5:30 P.M.
There is a little bit of leeway for last-minute filers. If you are absolutely positive that you will be owed a refund, you won’t get in trouble with the IRS if you miss Tuesday’s deadline.
However, waiting past deadline may be a gamble. If it turns out that you do actually owe money, you will be faced with fines, for both failing to file on time and failing to pay on time.
