Attorney disbarred for stealing funds from client

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Buffalo attorney has been disbarred after admitting he stole funds from his client and used the money for his own personal use.

David Widenor pleaded guilty to third degree grand larceny on Tuesday. The 45-year-old attorney was representing Electrolink Systems, Ltd. in a lawsuit against Vocal Technologies, Ltd. He received $22,000 in an escrow account pending a settlement, at which time he was supposed to send the money to his client.

But the settlement was never signed and the funds were never sent to his client, meaning they still belonged to Vocal Technologies. But Widenor still used the cash for his own personal use, including paying for his children’s education.

Because he pleaded guilty, Widenor has been disbarred. He faces up to two-and-a-third to seven years behind bars when he is sentenced in July.
