Police: Woman returns item she never purchased

CLARENCE, N.Y. (WIVB) – Troopers say a woman went into Bed, Bath and Beyond, pulled an item from the shelves, and returned it for a gift card worth more than $200.

Tuesday evening around 6:30 p.m., State Police were called to the Transit Road store, where the manager reported what happened. He says the woman, 39-year-old Nicole Maurer, came into the store and returned an item, but because she did not have a receipt, she was given a gift card worth more than $200.

The manager says when he went to put the item back on its shelf, he noted an empty space. According to the manager, reviewing the surveillance video showed Maurer coming into the store empty-handed, going to the shelf to remove the item, then bringing it up to the service desk and asking for a refund.

State Police went to the suspect’s home on Primrose Lane in Williamsville where she was arrested on charges of petit larceny. The gift card was recovered.

Maurer is due back in court at a later date.
