Vandals knock over tombstones at Batavia cemetery

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Batavia Police are looking for the vandals who knocked over gravestones at a cemetery.

Investigators say someone damaged about two dozen headstones at Elmwood Cemetery over the weekend. Staff is trying to contact as many family members as possible.

Superintendent Steven Davis said, “I’m really at awe of why these kids do what they do. It’s such a terrible thing. Over here was a 2-year-old. I mean a little kid knocking over a little kid’s stone.”

Bill Ealker went to visit his mother’s grave site and found damage.

“I feel violated. This is a place I come to pay my respects to her, and where I’ll be some day. I’ll be next to her,” he said.

Workers are now cleaning up the mess. Some of the headstones will have to be replaced.
