Smoke, flames near railroad tracks

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A series of brush fires sparked along the CSX track from the east side to Black Rock in Buffalo, Thursday afternoon.

Flames broke out miles apart from one another, but the cause of the fires remain a mystery.

Firefighters tackled blazes near Delaware and Linden Avenues, on Northland Avenue just east of Fillmore Avenue, and at a third scene off Hertel Avenue, between Military Road and Elmwood Avenue.

Fire officials suspect sparks from a passing train might have ignited the dry vegetation next to the tracks, or some piece of equipment might have malfunctioned, but CSX officials don’t believe any of the trains passing down this particular corridor could be to blame.

The cause of the fires remains under investigation. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
