CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Cheektowaga woman who admitted ripping off an elderly woman with dementia won’t spend any time behind bars.

Janelle Kowalewski initially befriended the 92-year-old woman’s son, who suffers from a mental illness, and after becoming a frequent guest in the home, learned where the elderly woman hid her money. The 31-year-old then stole between $6,000 and $18,000 to buy herself goodies like a flat screen TV and Lincoln Town Car, according to prosecutors.

She was sentenced Thursday to five years probation for third degree grand larceny. She will also have to pay $3,000 in restitution.
