Canadian icebreaking boat sits on Lake Erie

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Canadian icebreaking boat sat unmoving on Lake Erie for hours on Friday as it waited to clear a path for a returning ship.

The unmoving ship led to a lot of speculation about what it was doing there. Jon Snyder spent Friday morning riding his bike along the outer harbor bike path. Hours into his ride, he was curious why the boat was in the same spot.

“It’s pretty thick out there, you can see that,” he said. “He’s stuck in the ice and he’s been out there for a while and he’s not moving. Not like he’s trying to back up or go forwards, so he’s just kind of sitting there. I don’t know if he’s doing some kind of testing, maybe checking the thickness or something like that.”

It turns out, the icebreaker was waiting for a ship to return to help it clear it path. It has been slowly moving through the water, where ice is said to be up to 40 inches thick. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
