BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A man who escaped Buffalo police custody at the Erie County Medical Center has turned himself into authorities. Just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, 24-year-old Antonio Giglia escaped from officers while at the hospital. He turned himself into authorities around 10 p.m. on Monday.

The man’s attorney contacted News 4 Monday to say that Giglia was ready to turn himself in to police and that’s why we had the only cameras recording it. Giglia’s attorney Matt Albert spoke only with News 4 and he said that there was no violence in the escape, but he wouldn’t elaborate.

Albert said that Giglia had some mental health issues that led to his getting away from police and some issues with his medicine. He’s also hopeful that Giglia won’t just get punished, but will also get some help.

Albert said, “The kid has a lot to offer, but he needs help. I hope everyone kind of sees that, understands the situation for what it is, the officers certainly seem to, to their credit, and ultimately get the help that he needs as opposed to the punishment that’s just going to repeat the cycle all over again because he really does have a lot to contribute to society once he conquers these demons of his.”

Buffalo police have not said why Giglia was in custody in the first place but Albert says he’s accused in a burglary. The police Internal Affairs Division has launched an investigation into the escape. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
