Liquor store in front of Wegmans gets approval

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The State Liquor Authority has approved a license for a wine and liquor store in front of the Wegmans on Amherst Street.

The Buffalo News reports the SLA granted approval to Amherst Wine Partners LLC on Tuesday, which is owned by Nicole Wegman, daughter of Wegmans CEO Danny Wegman, and Patrick Fisher, who manages the Wegmans in West Seneca, despite strong opposition from local liquor store owners who claim the grocery chain is circumventing a state law that bars wine and liquor from being sold in supermarkets.

Developers worked with residents for months to create a building that would fit into the surrounding neighborhood.

The store is expected to open in the fall and will be the first of its kind in the Queen City.
