DEPEW, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Depew woman now admits she tried to hire a hitman to kill her mother-in-law.
Jean Stanton, a mother of three, began plotting her mother-in-law’s murder last February, when she said to her mechanic, “God I wish she [her mother-in-law] would just disappear.” The 29-year-old says the man claimed he could make it happen.
The mechanic wanted $1,000 up front but then got cold feet and told the mother-in-law about the plot, who then went to police.
Detectives then set up a sting where Stanton told undercover officers about the plan. Investigators believe her ex-husband and sister-in-law may have been future targets.
After her arrest, Stanton confessed to the crime. She pleaded guilty Thursday to second degree conspiracy.
She faces up to seven years in prison when she is sentenced in July.
