Witherspoon joins Alabama as assistant

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Former UB basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon is back in the game, joining Alabama’s coaching staff as an assistant today.

“Every day, from the time that this was on the table, it was hard not to gather some thought about, ‘These are some big schools, it’ll be terrific to coach against some of these programs’,” said Witherspoon.

Witherspoon, who spent 14 seasons as the Bulls’ head coach before UB fired him last year, spent last season helping out at the Park School in Buffalo, while also traveling around to observe coaches at levels ranging from small college to the NBA.

“There’s a lot of right ways to do things,” said Witherspoon. “Some of them we were already doing. I was surprised at how many people were aware of things we were doing.”

Witherspoon joins head coach Anthony Grant’s staff with Alabama, a coach he met when Grant led VCU to an upset over Duke in the NCAA Tournament in Buffalo.
