Two arrested over untaxed cigarettes

CARROLLTON, N.Y. (WIVB) – Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two men from Brooklyn Wednesday after a routine traffic stop in the Town of Carrollton.

The deputies say they found 490 cartons of untaxed stamped cigarettes inside the car. Police believe the cigarettes were being brought into New York from Virginia illegally and would have cost the State of New York $21,315 in excise tax.

Muad Almontaser, 21, and Gehad Almontaser, 19, were charged with criminal taxation fraud and criminal taxation transporting. Both were arraigned in Town of Salamanca Court and taken to the Cattaraugus County jail on $10,000 bail.

They are scheduled to appear in Town of Carrollton court on May 5. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
