Heavy rain delays opening of state canal system

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Heavy rainfall across New York has delayed this week’s scheduled opening of the State Canal System for the 2014 navigation season.

State Canal Corp. officials are advising mariners that high water along many stretches of the canals will delay Saturday’s scheduled opening at least for a couple of days.

The agency says it expects to be able to open most portions of the canals system early next week.

The high and fast-flowing canal waters have prevented crews from completing installation of the required navigation buoys.

Initial hours of operation for the statewide system of waterways are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 21. From May 22 to Sept. 10 the hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., returning to the earlier schedule after that until Nov. 19.
