BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Erie County officials and healthcare providers opened a new health care facility on Buffalo’s east side, Friday.
The new Health Mall is located in the former Dr. Matt Gajewski Human Services Center, at 1500 Broadway. The 14212 zip code has not had a source of primary or dental care since 2009.
The county spent $2.5 million to make it a state-of-the-art facility. It will have adult primary and OB-GYN, dental and mental health care under one roof.
The Health Mall is a public-private partnership, with multiple health caregivers, to assure residents of the area have access to health care. It is expected to reduce the number of costly emergency department visits by more than 3,400 in the first year.
“We knew we had to find a way to bring the clinic back, but not as a county-run facility,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said in a prepared statement. “It will not be staffed by the county because, truthfully, we couldn’t afford to do that.”
Reps from Erie County, Catholic Health, the University at Buffalo, Lake Shore Behavioral Health and Mid-Erie Counseling were are the official opening on Friday.
