Police: Woman tried to return items she never paid for

CLARENCE, N.Y. (WIVB) – Troopers were called to a pharmacy on reports of a customer who was possibly intoxicated and say they found the customer wasn’t drunk, but was shoplifting.

State Police were called to Walgreens on Transit Road in Clarence around 1:40 a.m. on Friday when staff reported a possibly intoxicated customer causing a disturbance. When troopers arrived, they found Melissa Lentini of Amherst leaving the store.

Authorities say the 46-year-old was not intoxicated, but she was shoplifting $288 worth of merchandise.

Troopers say a review of surveillance video showed Lentini taking items off shelves and placing them in a bag. She then allegedly when to the register and demanded a refund, telling the clerk that her grandmother had purchased them earlier in the day and that she did not have a receipt.

Police say when Lentini did not get a refund, she left the store with the merchandise that she had never paid for.

Lentini was arrested for petit larceny and is due back in Town of Clarence Court at a later date.
