Air One pilot honored at retirement event

HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) – A veteran of the Erie County Sheriff’s office is retiring, after nearly 45 years of work, including 30 in the skies over Western New York working as a pilot of the Air One helicopter unit.

A retirement party was held at the Brierwood Country Club in Hamburg Saturday for Capt. Kevin Caffery.

Caffery said he loves his job and will miss it, but it’s time for him to retire.

Asked what his best memories will be he said, “Without a doubt it’s some of the rescues that we did.  The two little kids off the ice in the Town of Evans a number of years ago, a few rescues at the brink of the falls and Zoar Valley.  There was a lot of rescues that were memorable and luckily most of them turned out very well.”

He added that it took the help of others around him to make so many things possible, and they should get credit even though it was his face and voice most people came to know. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
