NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y.(WIVB) – The Maid of the Mist launches its 129th consecutive season on Saturday, May 10. The tour boats take visitors for a breath-taking close-up view of Niagara Falls and are considered one of North America’s longest running tourist attractions.
As a special bonus this Mother’s Day weekend, all mothers will ride free on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11. The company is doing this to honor James Glynn’s 80th birthday. Glynn is Chairman of the Maid of the Mist Corporation and has been with the company for 64 consecutive seasons.
While a launch date of May 10 may seem late for the iconic tourist attraction, the company says the average opening date for the Maid of the Mist season is May 8.
The Maid of the Mist is setting sail from new docks on the American side of the lower Niagara River. For the first time, it will have competition from a tour boat operator launching from the Canadian side.
Hornblower Niagara, owned by a California company, won bidding rights in 2012 to serve tourists from docks on the Canadian side. Hornblower has not yet launched its initial season at Niagara Falls.
