BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A popular three-on-three basketball tournament held for more than 20 years in downtown Buffalo is moving to a new location.
The Gus Macker Tournament will be held in Darien Lake this year, sources tell News 4. An official announcement is expected to be made next week.
A statement released by Darien Lake late Friday afternoon says the theme park is still in conversations with organizers, and at this time, no agreement has been reached.
However, spokesman Vince Nicoletti said, “We are excited about the opportunity to host an event that many young people and families have come to enjoy for more than 20 years in Buffalo. We believe our family-friendly focus, along with our available space, infrastructure, security, and facilities, make Darien Lake a great location for the tournament.”
The Buffalo Police Athletic League, which hosts the event, was unsure whether or not to hold the summer staple. In previous reports, organizers told News 4 the event may be getting too costly. The Gus Macker attracts thousands of players and nearly 50,000 spectators to downtown Buffalo.
Sources say an agreement has been reached between the League, the City of Buffalo, and Darien Lake regarding the move.
The tournament is usually held at the end of June. It is unclear when the tournament will be held this year.
