BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Heavy smoke billowed into the air in North Buffalo as firefighters battled a two-alarm blaze on the 1900 block of Elmwood Avenue near Hertel.
Two fire companies were called to the scene, where firefighters battled flames through a second-story window. The blaze began around 1:50 p.m. and by 2:15, the fire was under control.
“For a building this size to be able to get in there and extinguish the fire as quickly as was done was a great job by the men and women of this department,” said Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield.
The fire commissioner says there had been a big fire at the warehouse, which was formerly used for storage, a few years and but since then has remained relatively empty. Heavy equipment had recently been at the site, demolishing the back portion of the structure.
Though there had been concern the flames could spread to an adjacent three-story building. Firefighters strategically cut off the fire and then worked on extinguishing it.
Fire investigators will examine the warehouse to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.
Traffic in the area was tied up as firefighters battled the flames, but once the roadway was re-opened, began to clear up.
