Man allegedly stabbed victim at campsite

MIDDLEBURY, N.Y. (WIVB) – State Police say a man stabbed another man an unknown number of times with a “hunting-type” knife while at a campsite in the Town of Middlebury.

Richard Gross, 26, of Byron has been charged with felony first degree assault. Troopers say Gross stabbed the 23-year-old man at a campsite early Sunday morning, then accompanied the victim in a vehicle to the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw.

The victim suffered a punctured lung and was taken by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he is listed in satisfactory condition.

Gross was arrested in the vehicle at the hospital, where police say they recovered the knife.

After being arraigned in Warsaw Town Court, he was taken to Wyoming County Jail. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
