Cab driver, passenger shot in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Police are looking for the gunman who shot a cab driver and his passenger. Police say the Liberty taxi driver, who is 23-years-old, and passenger both suffered serious injuries just before 10 p.m. on Clay Street.

Police say the cab driver is in critical condition at Erie County Medical Center. The passenger, who is 24-years-old, was treated and released from ECMC.

Detectives are looking at robbery as a motive. Officers were searching yards on Clay Street for evidence and interviewing residents.

The cab company owner says the driver has only been working for a couple of months, and things like this are bad for everyone.

Liberty Cab owner Bill Yuhnke said, “It’s going to be tougher to get a cab at night. Because drivers’ wives are going to tell them, ‘Listen, drive days, don’t go to work at night.’ I do believe there’ll be an impact on evening business, for sure.”

Yuhnke says drivers have some protection, like special trouble buttons and the ability to take credit cards. That limits the risk of carrying cash.
