Couple arrested after police say they tried to dodge checkpoint

NORTH HARMONY, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Florida couple who State Police say tried to avoid a road check on the southern tier were arrested on multiple charges.

Troopers were conducting a road check on Rt. 394 in the Town of North Harmony last Thursday when they saw a vehicle stop north of the road check and then turn around. Officers caught up to the vehicle and say they could smell marijuana emanating from the interior as they spoke to the driver, Heather Valdez, 37, and passenger, 45-year-old Benny Valdez, both of Crescent City, Florida.

A check of the vehicle uncovered marijuana, cocaine and two open cans of beer.

Both Heather and Benny are charged with fifth degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Benny was additionally charged with criminal possession of marijuana.

The couple were both taken to the Chautauqua County Jail on bail. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
