ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — An Iraq and Afghanistan veteran from the Buffalo area has been named the next commander of the New York National Guard’s main training site.

National Guard officials say Lt. Col. Dave Powell of Amherst will take over command of the Camp Smith Training Site in the fall.

Powell is currently the chief of training for the National Guard’s Directorate of Plans, Operations, Training and Readiness.

He began his military career in 1986 as an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army Reserve. He received his commission as a second lieutenant in 1990 and joined the New York Army National Guard.

Powell has served with the 42nd Infantry Division in Iraq and the 101st Calvary in Afghanistan.

Camp Smith in Westchester County is the New York National Guard’s premier training facility.
