BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Firefighters searched an occupied home twice but did not locate any victims. But in the process, one of their own was hurt.

Flames broke out at a two-and-a-half story home on Hamburg Street near South Park Avenue in Buffalo Thursday afternoon and the Buffalo Fire Department was careful to make sure no one was inside.

One firefighter was taken to ECMC with with a bad back injury after falling through a second story floor in the home.

Division Chief Michael Biassillo said, “We know he’s got some pretty good back injuries. I’m not sure how serious, but he was hurt.”

There is no damage estimate at this time. Investigators believe a squatter may have been living in the home, but there’s no word on what sparked the blaze. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
