Summer fun 4 families: Downtown Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Downtown Buffalo is booming with development, and that means more summer fun for your family.

Canalside will be a busy place over the summer months.  The Explore and More Museum was one of the first organizations to offer free events at Canalside, and this summer is no exception.

“We’re really excited to get back this summer. We have our imagination playground, which is a signature piece of Explore and More. Families love it, it’s sort of a chance to create whatever you want with the playground,” said Jennifer Fee, Marketing and Public Relations Manager for the museum.

Organizers also plan to have Family Fun Fridays, with a different theme each week involving crafts and activities.  Pirates of the Queen city is also back this summer on Tuesdays, with pirate themed activities.

The Explore and More Museum is currently located in East Aurora, but will eventually move to Canalside permanently in 2016.

“We are so excited with all of the development that’s happening at Canalside. We are planning our big move to Canalside in 2016, and we just couldn’t be happier with all of our neighbors down there. It’s really a wonderful revitalization effort for Buffalo and we’re just so happy to be a part of it,” said Fee.

To kick off the summer early, The museum is hosting a Touch a Truck event in East Aurora on May 18, inviting families to bring their children and climb around the different trucks.

The Buffalo Bisons have family-oriented events planned for the team’s 72-game schedule.

“So much of what we do at the ballpark is geared towards families,” says Brad Bisbing, spokesperson for the Bisons.

On June 7, the Bisons take on Syracuse at Coca Cola Field at 6:05 p.m. and will feature the 7th Annual Star Wars Night.  This has become a favorite for fans of all ages, with character appearances, a story line played out on the Bisons’ scoreboard, a postgame battle on the field and then a fireworks show.  The Bisons sell laser swords during the game, and the team wears special Star Wars jerseys that are auctioned off to benefit the American Heart Association.  The event sold out in 2013.

July 3 is another popular night at the field, with the KeyBank Independence Eve Celebration with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The team plays Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at 6:05 p.m. and the celebration at the game focuses on everything that is great about America.  The nation’s pastime plays out before the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus performs a concert with pop culture classics and stirring military tributes. The largest fireworks show of the concludes the night. In its 20th year, this one event has brought over 350,000 fans to the ballpark.

On Thursday, July 10, the Bisons play against Durham at 7:05 p.m. and will hand out Logo baseballs to the first 3,000 fans in attendance.  After the game, you can go down onto the field and play catch under the lights at Coca Cola Field.

Every Sunday that the team has a home game is Kids Club Sunday.  These games start at 1:05 p.m. and there are games for children throughout the Bisons game. After the team is done playing, kids can run the bases, just like the players.
