Vatican congregation upholds closure of schools

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The fight to save three Catholic schools from closure appears to be over.

The Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education has upheld Bishop Richard Malone’s decision to close St. Bernadette in Orchard Park, St. Francis of Assisi in Tonawanda, and St. Mary of the Lake in Hamburg.

Bishop Malone is encouraging parents with students in those schools to enroll their children in a nearby Catholic school.

A total of 10 elementary schools will close at the end of the academic year because of declining enrollment.
