After appeal, money raised for deaf athlete

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Less than 24 hours after Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown joined with Erie Community College President Jack Quinn to appeal to the public for donations to support a local student athlete, all the money Crystle Marion needs has been raised.

Marion, 21, has been selected to compete in the 2014 Under-21 World Deaf Basketball Championships this summer in Turkey and needed to raise $3,000 for airfare and hotel.

Mayor Brown kicked off the drive with a $250 match donation with ECC. West Herr then pitched in the remaining money to send her on her way. Marion will travel to Samsun, Turkey for the competition from July 4 through 12.

She was recruited and selected to play for the USA Deaf Olympics Basketball team, according to Mayor Brown’s office. She is the the second leading scorer for the ECC Women’s Basketball team and has won several awards and a senior athletic scholarship. A criminal justice major, Marion plans to continue her education at Rochester Institute of Technology and play for the Women’s Basketball team.

Quinn calls Marion “a shining example of the best of this college.”

Mayor Brown said, “I’ve known Crystle since her winning days on the basketball court at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf. I am confident she will contribute and play hard to win in Turkey.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
