Students experience drunk driving in simulation

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) – Students in Niagara County got a lesson in safe driving Friday at a traffic safety fair hosted by area police agencies.

One of the main goals was to teach high school seniors the dangers of drinking and driving. The students put on goggles that simulate being intoxicated, then got behind the wheel of a golf cart.

Lockport Police Lt. Terry Gill said, “It gives you a different perspective. Most people when they get arrested for intoxication, or when they’re driving, they think everything is fine. They think they’re seeing things like you or I do. But in actuality their senses are greatly impaired.”

Students also got to see several vehicles that had been involved in alcohol-related crashes.
