VA clears final hurdle before selecting site for WNY national veterans’ cemetery

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has cleared the final hurdle to create a national veterans’ cemetery in WNY, according to Senator Charles Schumer.

His office reports the VA has completed an environmental assessment for three potential sites for the cemetery.

Currently, there is no national veterans’ cemetery within a 75-mile radiues in WNY, even though hundreds of thousands of veterans live in the region. The closest national cemetery is in Bath, NY.

Last fall, Senator Schumer urged the offices involved with the assessment to expedite the process. Now that is has been completed, the VA needs to settle on a final site. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
