Active search ends for missing boater

LEWISTON, N.Y. (WIVB) – Crews from both the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards have ended their active search for a boater, missing since Thursday.

Responders scoured more than 5,000-square miles of Lake Ontario over a 49-hour period in their search for John Supple. The Lewiston man launched out of Wilson Tuscarora State Park aboard a camouflaged 16-foot pleasure craft on Wednesday.

U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. Joseph Higgins, Coast Guard Sector Buffalo deputy commander released a statement saying, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends. The decision to suspend a search takes extreme consideration and is one of the most difficult decisions a Coast Guardsman is ever faced with.”
