Harsh weather wreaks havoc on roofs

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - This past winter was harsh. Western New York was hit with two blizzards, arctic temperatures and strong winds.

The heavy snow put a strain on roofs and the persistent cold caused ice dams to form. “The heat from the house starts melting the snow on the roof and then when it gets down to its lowest point it freezes so a lot of people are calling about ice damage,” said Mike Klein, a Lead Salesman at Buffalo Roofing Company.

Now that spring is here parts of the region were hit with heavy rain. It has caused even more problems for homeowners who haven’t recovered from winter damage.

“We’re getting a lot of calls where people have leaks,” said Klein. “The other thing it does is you have a granule base on your shingle and with the heavy rains it actually washes the loose granules off so your losing a lot of roof protection.”

Klein explained that if you notice structural damage it’s important to call an experienced roofer to get an estimate to repair or replace your roof.

He said the price of a replacement depends on many factors and can cost upwards of $20,000.

“It could be anywhere from $6,000 to $20,000 to replace a roof. But if they don’t get the roof replaced the damage that incurs inside is going to double,” said Klein.

If you want to reduce the amount of damage when harsh weather hits, Klein suggest that homeowners should clear their gutters. He said if they don’t the water in the gutter starts to freeze, pull away from the house and cause a lot of issues.

Due to the weather, Buffalo Roofing has also seen an increase in sales.

“There has been a big increase of calls from this year compared to last year,” said Klein. “We get anywhere between 20 and 30 calls a day.”

The company’s owner projects that sales could double this season.
