Man surrenders to police after setting his house on fire

LEWISTON, N.Y (WIVB)- A standoff between involving State Police along with Lewiston Police and a man on West Lane in the Village of Lewiston has ended.

State Police say 51-year old Leonard A. Zientara surrendered to police after setting his home on fire.  They say the man came out on to the roof of of his first floor and started a backpack that appeared to be full of paper, on fire.  Trooper Morales tells News 4 that the second floor of the house sustained damage from the fire.

Zientara is being held at the Niagara County jail. He is charged with arson.

According to authorities, Zientara called police early Sunday morning with a complaint.  After police arrived at the house, Zientara refused to answer the door or come out of the house.  Negotiators stayed in contact with the him throughout the day, until finally surrendering before 6pm.

Police had asked that residents on West Lane evacuate their residence and leave the area until the incident has been resolved.

Residents within a two block area to West Lane were asked to stay away from the area and police units and to stay in their residence unless necessary to leave.
