Officials highlight boater safety

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - This is National Safe Boating Week, and the Coast Guard wants to make sure you’re safe on local waterways ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

Tuesday, Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster will issue a proclamation focused on boating safety. Experts say you should have the Coast Guard inspect your boat, and make sure all life vests and emergency equipment work properly.

BoatUS adds boaters should make sure their drive gear is not cracked, rotted or corroded before heading out. In addition, freshwater boaters are encouraged to make sure there is no stray current leaking into the water.

Boaters are advised to have a back up plan to get you home in case your boat won’t get you back.

Last but not least, BoatUS reminds boaters to be safe when it comes to heavy traffic, sun exposure and alcohol.
