Three women caught early on in bank fraud scheme

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Three women would have made off with more than $40,000 in a “check kiting” scheme had the trio not been caught, prosecutors say.

On Tuesday, Carlique Deberry, 35, Sayonara Heath, 32, Sade Heath, 27, all of Buffalo, pleaded guilty to bank fraud. The three women would open bank accounts and deposit large checks that were written on accounts that had insufficient funds or were closed.

The scheme is to then withdraw smaller amounts from the accounts after a portion of the check had been cleared.

Had the women gotten away with it, they would have stolen more than $40,000 from various banks. But they were caught after having taken just $390.95.

A charge of bank fraud carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
