WNY woman wins $1M Powerball prize

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A 68-year-old woman from Chautauqua County has become Western New York’s newest millionaire after picking a winning Powerball ticket.

Janice Cochran of Westfield won $1,000,000 in the April 9 drawing and claimed her prize on April 16. She was presented with an over-sized check on Tuesday.

According to Cochran, she only plays the lottery when she has “a couple of extra dollars.” She went into the Country Fair Store on Main Street in Brocton on April 5 to buy her ticket and didn’t discover until a few days after the drawing that she was a winner when she went to the lottery’s website.

“I saw the name of the store first, and thought, ‘That’s where I bought my ticket.’ Then I checked the numbers and was shocked when they matched up. I actually shook a little when I realized I had won,” said Cochran.

She will receive a one-time lump sum payment of $661,800 after required holdings. Cochran says she isn’t sure what she’ll do with the money, but may take a trip to Arizona.

This has been a lucky year for Western New Yorkers. In February, a Lancaster man bought a ticket worth $10 million.
