FALCONER, N.Y. (WIVB)  – Some Falconer residents were evacuated from their homes Wednesday morning, and others are dealing with flooded basements.

Falconer Mayor David Krieg says three homes on Lindley Avenue were evacuated Wednesday morning as a precautionary measure. Krieg says there are lots of flooded basements. Many can’t pump the water out because too much water is coming in. Residents should know, if the water reaches the furnace they will need to shut off their gas.

Falconer residents who were evacuated went to the high school gymnasium, where the Red Cross is assisting them. Krieg says if any other families need to seek shelter he encourages them to go to the evacuation center as well. The school is located at 2 East Avenue.

New York State Police say the flash flooding is caused by a run off, they explained it’s a hilly area and the low lying areas are the ones affected. Krieg says the run off is filling the rivers and creeks. As a result many fire, police and emergency personnel are on standby just in case something happens.

The flash flooding is impacting the school day in Falconer. Temple Elementary School is closed all day Wednesday. Fenner Elementary and Falconer Middle and High School are closing at 11 a.m.

A flash flood warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Wednesday for Chautauqua and SW Cattaraugus Counties

Heavy rain has caused flooding on some area roadways, Wednesday morning. The side of some roadways have been washed away, and crews will need to reconstruct them.

Drivers in the southern tier will want to avoid some area roadways:

Route 62:  Closed between Water Street, in Frewsburg, to Foote Avenue, in Kiantone

Route 394: Closed between Mather Road and Memorial Drive in the Village of Mayville

Allen Street and Elmwood Avenue, right outside the Village of Falconer, are flooded.

Route 380: The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department has announced that Route 380 between Kimball Stand and Falconer in the Town of Ellicott is closed to all traffic due to flooding. The road will be closed until further notice, so alternate travel plans should be made.

Route 353: Rain created a problem for drivers on Route 353, in the Village of Cattaraugus, where there is now a big hole in the road.
